Someone would have to be dumber than a post to go into Mexico right now—IMHO.

Wife and I used to spend a week in Ixtapa in January.
Not any more.

any parent who lets their kid go to Mexico for spring break- is nuts!
I’ve read a report the latest trend is the cartels and affilitates assassinating cabbies (who are often drug mules) along with their fares
Matter of time before there is a major tourist death story

I just got back from a week in Cancun -it was great. This is like saying don’t go to the USA because 500 people were murdered in Detroit last year. Use your common sense.

One guy going to Mexico and saying it was great is like taking a brochure from the Somalian Travel Board ...

I lived in Mexico for nearly 7 years and I am here to tell you that I would not go to Mexico now. Not even Cancun. Several foriegn tourists were recently killed there for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Very good advice, but somewhere there are some idiots who wont pay attention to it. I know someone who is from a town South of Matamores/Brownsville (He’s legal). Every winter he would go there to visit family. He always claimed it was safe in that particular area. I just spoke to him following his most recent visit and he says it has become very dangerous and he might not be going back anytime soon and he fears for his relatives.

USA is one thing. Detroit is another...I wouldn’t go there either.

We lived in Minnesota for 16 years. I think we visited Mexico 14 times in those years.
One year we went to a resort at Hautulco, way south, almost to Belize and had a great time. We had a few extra days so we flew from Hautulco to Oaxaca and checked into a small hotel near the public plaza. Great chicken mole.
Sadly, we just missed the Oaxaca Radish Festival...

Hogwash. In Detroit, they're not kidnapping outsiders for profit...yet. In Detroit, lopped-off heads aren't turning up in Igloo coolers...yet.

Cabo San Lucas, at the southern tip of the Baja peninsula, is well away from the drug farming areas and smuggling routes. More than any other place in Mexico, they depend on tourist dollars rather than narcodollars, so the local cops keep a very tight lid on things and it is still safe. In fact, they actively discourage spring breakers because they are after the more affluent tourists. I really would not go anywhere else in the country right now.

You haven’t been to the real Mexico unless you’ve been to Oaxaca...
