,,, I'm in New Zealand, but in the lower North Island, a long way from the disaster. I have the radio on listening to updates. I've heard in some suburbs people are stepping up on to the ground outside their front doors. Christchurch, west of the Port Hills is as flat as a pancake, so that gives an idea of how it is. There's holes in the road that cars can fit into. The central city though is more like its been shelled.
