Michigan has areas with a very independent, self sufficient and even frontier mentality. Nice place, solid people.
Pretty much anywhere outside the large urban areas really.

True, but there really is a frontier sort of outlook in portions of Michigan which surprised me. Similar, but different than in more settled rural areas.
I also found a number of nice people and pockets around Detroit, as well as areas of hellish blight. In ten years though, the decline in fortunes has been very noticeable. I think the passage of time between my trips there made the decline more apparent - like rolling down stairs rather than rolling down an incline.
