Somebody will be here in a sec to blame it on airplane contrails.

It has been theorized that these moderately intense swarms could actually split the Arabian plate....!
Will it happen now...probably not but the tectonics and volcanics behind this area are truly fascinating!
Thanks NorwegianViking.
New update 11/15/10: There have been 42 earthquakes now. There has been an average of one EQ every half an hour of a magnitude of +/- 5.0. Something is happening there and/or about to happen. That, combined with the eruption of the al-Tair volcano just north in the Red sea in 2007, and the African fissure opening up to form a new ocean (see my above comment for links to both news/science items) and seeing that this spot is one of the most important shipping lanes in the world, and knowing that Yemen is a hotbed of terrorism and the seas around this area are a hotbed of piracy ... one can only say "COME SOON LORD!"
The Afar depression is one of two areas in the world (Iceland is the other) where a spreading center comes up onto land.
Agreed.
What is interesting with this swarm, though it has abated a bit is that the intensity is a bit elevated.
Also what I posted before of how fragile the area truly is stretching from the Cameroon volcanic zone over to Yemen.
Cameroon press has reported for days activity but as of yet nothing confirmed.
Oh good grief
This swarm is at a triple junction spreading center. As such, it is naturally has a high potential for moderate earthquake generation and historically a very active area seismically. I wouldn't head to the shelter yet.
Yeah Iceland has been on my evening webhits for almost two years now....good stuff!
Joe, thanks for your post! I was wrong, you were right. The two are different sites. Strait of Hormuz to the north of Saudi Arabi, Gulf of Aden to the south. Gulf of Aden is not the Gulf of Oman. I need to study my geography! I am thankful you were able to correct me.
Thanks for your correction.
I believe it is a suggestion to people living in those parts...from Allah....(Muzzies, take heed!)
At 10Km?
It is indeed. Please view this(Le Nozze Di Figaro - Sull’Aria) if you wish to “cleanse the palate”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmlCpOojau8&feature=related
Earthquakes in a line
http://screencast.com/t/rToFMueVW
Doesn’t look strange ? All the earthquakes are on the same line; they occur in separate continents !
Perhaps those pinged (Strategerist, winoneforthegipper; SteveVanDoorn;] can share some insights on it all.
Strategerist can keep us grounded with whatever
“Now, now, clueless idiots . . . “
exhortations he’s a-mind to.
And the rest can speculate creatively.
Already shared a few thoughts on this Quix....a nice link on the rift zone as well.
Something to keep an eye on for general interest if nothing else....!
Is there any record of tsunamis in that area, historical or in the geological record?
