Note to Thaddeus: Intentionally scripted is a tautology.

Dude. Last night’s episode of CSI had serious bleepage goin’ on. I was suprised. I couldn’t believe my ears as I was in the kitchen putzin’ with foodage. I actually had to go walk in front of the TV to verify that my ears heard the bleeps.

Based on my superb lip reading ability I believe they were carpet F-bomging. Mebe clown or hat appropriate pro-noun ‘hole’ useage, dunno.

Ah, yes. America and Australia are like America and England: Two nations divided by a common language.

Not to mention that a bundle of sticks and a cigarette are also considered inappropriate terms here in the states.

know whatchya mean. what's up with the "very pleasant sexual feeling you" curse?

Now, German swearing, that's something to make your ears bleed. No pleasantries involved whatsoever: obscene is putting things mildly. Taking the Lord's name in vain in English is rather quaint compared to German cursing; the wrath of God akin to the sum total of the Tribulation is being invoked.

And not to mention what US sports fans are prepared to do for their favourite team.

Down here that would make them "whores" ie those who really like their team (Whore is cognate with Latin carus Irish cara "beloved").

What all this moral outrage about increasing vulgarisation of the language misses is that the majority of the "bad words" complained about were originally euphanisms for other words eg "crap" (something to be rejected) began to be used to replace another word (quess what), until eventually everyone knew what was really being said and people decided that the euphanism wasn't so euph anymore.

The slippery slope runs both ways.

I remember the movie MASH being shown on TV when I was a kid, 1980 or so. They bleeped out words like “ass” and “shit” but missed the f-bomb at the end. I guess censors are human.

It’s fascinating reading about what constitutes “swearing” in different countries. Supposedly it is very insulting to call a French person a “camel”. In Latin America, aside from the sexual and scatological terms, the most awful insults are religious, as in involving the Virgin Mary, etc.

Probably a coincidence. The use of "crapper" as a dysphemism for a latrine appears to be an Americanism unknown in the English speaking world until late last century. I was a man of mature years before knowing it as an alternative to "bog" or "dunny".
