Russia is willing to gamble that things won't get out of hand. Iran is a customer for Russian arms and technology. Russia is also trying to form a co-op of oil and gas producing countries in order to manipulate prices. And it may be Russia sees Iran as a surrogate who can sponsor terrorist outfits around the world to advance Russian objectives. Putin is indistinguishable from the Russian mafia.
