Off topic...but from the article...
Following the tour, the Obamas emerged from the State House and walked through Lawyer's Square, pausing at the memorial to Thurgood Marshall, the nation's first African-American Supreme Court Justice. Michelle Obama waved to the crowd before the motorcade sped away.
I wonder why reporters always find it necessary to use the above phrasing when describing a famous Afro-American?
Why can't they simply write, "...pausing at the memorial to former Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall." ?
If anyone is really interested in eliminating racism in this country, that would be a good first step.
George Washington is never described as the first white president of the United States is he?
