You think the media is going to play any effective sound bites of GOP congress members? I agree the Repubs need to better handle the media. If that means coming out and making one short, very effective sentence, then that is what they should do. If a House leader speaks for 2 minutes, the media will pull the least beneficial sound bite to fit their agenda, if they even get their own words in the story at all.

Oh the “theory” of a revolution that hadn’t even occurred?

The french were MORE inspired by OUR revolution in general and Ben Franklin in particular - than we were of them! Of course they chose to immediately go socialist instead of the direction we took, but they are french and can’t help it.

The constitution gives congress the right to pass spending laws for basically anything it wants. There’s no specific limits that I’m aware of. The congress is the safety net (supposedly). And they get voted in and out.

The end result is the constitution gives the people the power to elect a congress that can then spend and how to pay for it.

If this wasn’t the case, you could easily take a case to federal court and not only get unemployment benefits banned, but obamacare, social security and anything else that’s not specifically listed in required services in the constitution.

Try it.

You are a socialist... and sadly your indoctrination has not even entered your psyche.

kind of like the word liberal has changed meaning dramatically.

Correct, a Classic Liberal in the 1770's was an Anti-Statist (anti-Monarchist) and today a "Liberal" is a Statist (Marxist). 180% phase shift in meaning.

Article 1 section 8 gives congress the right to pass laws to give money to the unemployed.

You can't really believe that this is what the Founding Fathers intended to be the province of the federal government. If the federal government has the power to tax and spend for whatever it sees fit, then what power is reserved to the states? To the people? Hint: the federal government was meant to be weak and small, not tax and spend without limit.

I’m a Republican, not a libertarian. I got pulled into some ridiculous basic constitutional law stuff on this thread that I really shouldn’t have to be explaining.

?? OH? And how pray tell? Please don't say "general welfare". That is THE most misused term in the constitution! Section 8 speicifically mentions who the section is refering to, and it is NOT individuals!

The power reserved to the states is the power to elect presidents. It used to also be for senators, but sadly that’s to the people. The people have the power to elect the house of repressentatives.

For right or wrong, that’s how it is set up. There really are no specific spending limits in it, it’s setup to allow the voters to elect those that decide it.

Wow. I'm not even sure how to reply to this statement. It's so far from what I believe the United States is about that it's difficult to come up with a retort, other than the fact that you're implying unlimited power to the federal government that completely abrogates every single word in the US Constitution. Again--why have a Constitution, if what you say is true? What would have been the point of the states ratifying such a document?

So there is no limit to what the Congress can do? None of the limitations of power placed on the Federal government over states and individuals exists. Wow. That is sure rewriting history. This may not be the best website for you, if that is your reading of our history.

The point is that we’re given the power to vote them out and that there’s fundamental rules they can’t break. Spending on whatever is not in those fundamental rules, congress decides. (Then the president can veto of course, and then the supreme court can overturn it..)

I’ve stated there are limits. The president has to sign off. The USSC can overturn it. Voters can vote out congress and override what the last one did.

That’s our checks and balances system that the country is based on. I’m not sure why there is any debate over this.

Our side still does a piss poor job at explaining and not coming off sounding like we’re callous...I watched the MSM 6:30 news last night and nearly choked...it’s been a while since I watched. The sound bytes are ridiculous. We have to do a much better job or we’ll be the same republicans who want to starve the old people and babies.

Wanna know why NV’s leaning towards Reid now? Wanna know why in the last couple weeks the polls have suddenly shifted to the dems, especially in the last week? This is it. People out there are raving pissed or confused as hell over the fact that the GOP is taking a hardline stand against this at this time. The stupidity is staggering.

I agree the Republicans could do a better job but it takes two to tango. By that I mean they need a cooperative and unbiased media. Right, lots of luck on that!

The media elected Obama, period! The Democrats and the media spent the entire eight years of the Bush administration bashing him and the Republicans. Remember the Republican Culture of Corruption? We later learned who the real corrupt party is! The media even ridiculed Bush the day of the 9/11 attack - saying that when he was informed of the attack in a classroom in Florida that he looked like a deer in the headlights. When returning to Washington there was information that the White House and Air Force One were targets so the Secret Service and the military commanded a circuitous route back to Washington with a stop at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. The media called this cowardly and said Bush was a coward.

That set the stage early on and they never let up for eight years.

On the other hand they praised Obama, fended off any questions about his qualifications and eligibility and called those who did question them racists and right wing nuts. They never called him on all the lies he told in the campaign, then or now, and basically acted as part of his campaign. To get any coverage at all the Republicans had to buy millions of dollars of time from those same media. That is the crux of Campaign Finance Reform - to silence all opposition to the Democrats.

Why did McCain sponsor it and Bush sign it? That is a mystery to me but the media and the Democrats were calling all who didn't support it in the pockets of K Street and Big Business.

Bush and his people did not do a good job defending against that onslaught and any attempts they made could only be found on Fox News. The same thing is happening now. What you see are edited presentations by the media which favor the Democrats and make the Republicans look bad.

Republicans are not as dumb as they appear but they are having to speak through the distorted media. Was what Michael Steele said as bad as it has been portrayed? Not to me. Yet, he was brow beaten by bad press into apologizing. The same thing happened to trent Lott back in the nineties while Sheets Byrd was whitewashed.

Examples abound so give the Republicans a little slack and stop piling on along with the media.

I’d still like to know how the “theory” of a revolution that had not even occured inspired Franklin and Jefferson during the drafting of the constitution ...

Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a huge influence on Jefferson and Franklin from 1762.

Have you ever read the Federalist Papers? If you've read the US Constitution and still don't understand it, the Federalist Papers will give you a better idea of what the Founding Fathers intended to be the basis of the federal government. You can read them at http://www.foundingfathers.info/federalistpapers/.

I know you're busy looking for work, and I sure hope you find something very soon.
