Promise Broken: $160 Million for Abortions in Pennsylvania by Obamacare!

Did you actually believe him?

Not too long ago President Obama was willing to say or do anything to get more Democrats to vote for his massive government health care bill. He took people on special Air Force One trips, promised rewards, and did his best to utilize Machiavellian tactics. The pro-life Democrats needed special handling. Obama was willing to not only promise but even sign an executive order stating that Obamacare would not subsidize abortions. Well feel free to put that document in the shredder. Promise officially broken.

A couple of weeks ago the Obama administration announced they would be sending $160 million to Pennsylvania to set up a high-risk insurance plan for thousands of Pennsylvania residents with pre-existing conditions. The report was initially ignored, because it never said anything about abortion. However, after some digging, several pro-life organizations have come to realize that Pennsylvania money will indeed cover a wide variety of, if not most, types of abortions.
“What their plan actually does is say if it’s legal, it’s covered. Abortion ends up being covered if it’s not explicitly excluded.” – Douglas Johnson, National Right to Life Committee

Pennsylvania’s 60 page solicitation for funds stated that “elective abortions will not be covered”, but went on to say that “only abortions and contraceptives that satisfy the requirements” of state statutes will be covered. One of those statutes proclaims that abortions can be provided by physicians who determine in:
“his best clinical judgment, the abortion is necessary … in the light of all factors (physical, emotional, psychological, familial and the woman’s age) relevant to the well-being of the woman. No abortion which is sought solely because of the sex of the unborn child shall be deemed a necessary abortion.”

This statute would mean the only kind of abortion that is not covered by the federal tax dollars sent in would be abortions because of gender wishes. As anyone involved with the abortion industry knows, many doctors are happy to grant abortions simply because having a baby is emotionally draining on the mother. And considering practically no one would ever officially ask for an abortion because of gender selection alone, virtually all abortions of people in this plan can be covered by taxpayer dollars.
How many times did Obama and others in his administration promise and guarantee that abortions would not be covered by this new health care plan? The pro-life community and others are rightly outraged by the broken promise of Obamacare.

“If there was any doubt that the health care reform bill included taxpayer-funded abortions, those doubts are now laid to rest.” – Marjorie Dannenfelser, Susan B. Anthony List
The Obama administration is now having to reluctantly respond to this anger. So far their response is to deny. The administration still claims that abortions will be covered only for rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is at risk. In other words, they are just sticking to their story even though the facts are out there for all to see. Unless the federal government steps in and oversees the use of that money then I would assume Pennsylvania will use it for exactly what they said they will use it for. Abortions will be covered for any and every reason except gender selection.

“This is the boldest admission yet from the Obama administration that the president’s executive order on taxpayer-funded abortion was a sham.” – House Republican Leader John Boehner
It is possible that Pennsylvania could just decide on their own to only use the money for abortions when it comes to rape, incest, and the life of the mother. But they are simply on their own honor system. All other states will apparently be able to simply choose if they cover all abortions with federal dollars. So Boehner is right, all those promises were a sham. If Obama doesn’t want to be called a liar, he needs to put forth new, solid regulations that will guarantee the people’s money will not pay for abortions.
