Many foundational courses must be taken as prerequisites for upper-division science and engineering studies: mathematics (calculus, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations), physics (mechanics, thermodynamics and light waves, modern and nuclear physics), chemistry, biochemistry, etc. The freshman and sophomore courses often are designed to "weed out" the weaker students. There are often lab classes where data can't be faked. It would be hard to imagine someone used to vague language and fancy oratory drawn to such concrete and humbling material.
