What a stupid comment! This alone should disqualify Palin from consideration for the GOP Presidential nomination>

I voted for Ronald Reagan, Mrs. Palin, and you're not Ronald Reagan.

Would Sarah want someone high on pot driving on the opposite side of the road she is driving on?

Does she not realize marijuana is a gateway drug that is proven to lead to other drug usage?

This headline is totally misleading. If you watched the program, Judge Napolitano was asking her about some police op where they went after this guy and made it into some Elian Gonzales type deal with a swat team and everything. She just said that in that case it was probably overdoing it.

She never said it should be legalized or anything and in fact said it shouldn’t be. She just said in the big scheme of things, it’s not high on the totem pole in terms of what the police should be focusing on compared to murders, kidnappings, and other crimes.

In any event, it’s really a local issue and she was just giving a personal opinion.

Another post by you calling Sarah Palin a populist.

Care to define what YOU think being a populist is and how Sarah Palin IS a populist?

You throw that tag around like it is something that is so evil that Governor Palin is a lightweight as a result.

Please support your position with some sort of list of facts and some logic!

Sarah is giving you the Alaskan answer ~

Frankly, if we had cops going door to door busting people for pot possession and/or use in this neighborhood they wouldn't make it past the first embassy guy with a machinegun ~ and there are a fair number of those folks around.

Really, the "crime" she's referring to would take door to door sorts of raids in neighborhoods which are USUALLY not done in this country.

Conservatives only rarely advocate "door to door" and almost always sarcastically.

It's not currently Conservative policy in this country to advocate door to door raids on private homes for the purpose of seeking out crimes.

Complete Palin quote: politico

"If we're talking about pot, I'm not for the legalization of pot,” Palin said. “I think that would just encourage our young people to think that it was OK to go ahead and use it.”

“However, I think we need to prioritize our law enforcement efforts,” Palin added. “If somebody's gonna smoke a joint in their house and not do anybody any harm, then perhaps there are other things our cops should be looking at to engage in and try to clean up some of the other problems we have in society.”

Palin then urged law enforcement to “not concentrate on such a, relatively speaking, minimal problem we have in the country.”

Some other background:

answers.com (I don't see a date, so this may have changed since the answer)

Is marijuana legal in Alaska?

Yes, to an extent.

Possession: Residents may possess up to one ounce of marijuana for their own personal use in their home. Possession of 1-4 ounces is a misdemeanor, while anything over four ounces is a felony.

Cultivation: The state constitution's right to privacy allows up to 24 plants to be cultivated in one's home. However, maintaining a grow operation of any size outside one's home is a felony.

Sale: Selling less than one ounce is a misdemeanor; more than one ounce is a felony.

The state also has a medical marijuana registry maintained by the Bureau of Vital Statistics.

CBS News

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is known as a staunch social conservative. She's a life long NRA member, belongs to an anti-abortion-rights group called Feminists for Life and opposes civil unions.

But the self-proclaimed "hockey mom" had some youthful indiscretions.

Palin has said she smoked marijuana but didn't enjoy it and doesn't smoke anymore.

"I can't claim a Bill Clinton and say that I never inhaled,” she told the Anchorage Daily News in 2006.

At the time, marijuana was legal under Alaska's liberal drug laws.

A 1975 Alaska Supreme Court decision allowed adults to possess small amounts of marijuana for personal use. In June 2006, a law signed by then-Republican Gov. Frank Murkowski re-criminalized the drug. The American Civil Liberties Union later sued the state, alleging that the law violates Alaskans' state constitutional right to privacy.

Palin has said she doesn't support legalizing the drug, fearing the message it would send to her five children.

I agree with her on this issue. I don’t think pot should be legalized, but cops do need to prioritize their time. Focus first on the crimes that hurt innocent people, then, if they still have time for it, then start in on the smaller stuff.

Palin didn’t say it wasn’t a big deal; she said there were higher priorities to deal with before (not instead of) going into someone’s house to arrest them for smoking marijuana (unless children are in the house). I’m conservative, and I agree. It doesn’t mean I don’t want drug crimes to be ignored, but limited resources call for prioritizing. It’s not populism, it’s simply common sense.

Marijuana being illegal, and the subsequent elimination of the hemp industry is one the stupidest policies in the US. Absolutely, flagrantly idiotic.

Wanting to put people in jail for growing and smoking a plant is NOT a conservative social policy. To whatever degree the whole idea of the “drug war” is a policy of Conservatism, I reject it totally.

5% of the world population and 25% of the world’s prisoners, most from drug laws, is NOT a conservative policy. Letting the prison industry and unions influence lawmaking is an absurdly stupid idea.

Well, we certainly do have higher priorities for our police forces than busting down doors to capture someone firing up a joint...
BUT..
my own experiences cause me to detest and fight anything that has anything to do with drugs or is a gateway to drugs.

They are by far an abomination that absolutely ruins lives beyond repair. (personal anecdote)

Gov. Palin has it right this time. There are pressing issues these days that need to be dealt with using limited resources. Lighting up a joint in the privacy of your own home does not even register on my scale of importance.

Distortion of the story and her position.

She is on the record for NOT making pot legal. Still holds the position.

However, she recognizes that pursuing user is time consuming process. There are other things much more needful to be done by law enforcement.

I actually agree with part of the libertarian argument: What a grown adult does in the privacy of their own home is not the governments business. However, I add the caveat that if what you are doing, OR THE RESULTS OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING, comes out of the house and causes a danger or burden on society, then it becomes the government’s business.
