The word over at “the oil drum” (an internet forum for oil workers to discuss various topics) is that BP engineers believe the well casing has been ruptured and is leaking under the sea floor. That means unless the relief wells work we are going to be dealing with one hell of an epic problem. If the well casing is ruptured, there is no way to kill the well from the top down.

That is the theory that HillBuzz (and alot of their posters) are floating. Is the big ‘keep away’ a postponement of the inevitable? Is the actual situation being kept from us...for the political end game of Cap and Tax?

If you will notice all the estimates are in barrels not gallons since there are 42 gallons in a barrel of oil so what ever they are saying multiply it by 42.

It is likely that it is much worse, as the discussion indicates. The turning away of help has a simpler explanation. The use of millions of gallons of dispersants from NALCO means that the booms and sweeps will not work. Instead, it will travel much further underwater before hitting the beach with the toxic chemicals in tow. All this so Soros, Lehman, and Goldman-Sachs can get profits.

Exactly, on top of that they suspect that this well has high concentrations of Benzene and toluene type compounds etc., which are both highly toxic and water soluble from what I read.

The few experts in the oil field -- including geologists, chemists, etc. -- able or willing to even speak of this BP event told me early on that it is likely the entire reserve will bleed out. Unfortunately none of them could say with any certainty just how much oil is in the reserve in question because, for one thing, the oil industry and secrecy have always been synonymous.
According to BP data from about five years ago, there are four separate reservoirs containing a total of 2.5 billion barrels (barrels not gallons). One of the reservoirs has 1.5 billion barrels. I saw an earlier post here quoting an Anadarko Petroleum report which set the total amount at 2.3 billion barrels.

Just wondering why can't BP build a large structure over the leaking pipe, starting with the walls then slowly and carefully built a roof over it, or slide a roof over it, slowly containing the oil spewing out, and redirecting it into container ships above?

Is the actual situation being kept from us...for the political end game of Cap and Tax?When the Senate failed to pass the resolution (53-47) shutting down the EPA calling Carbon Dioxide a pollutant and regulating it, Cap and Tax became nearly inevitable. Of course, you had to be watching C-SPAN2 to catch that, not one of the 'blowout' news channels.
Never waste a crisis, dontchaknow? .

not to quibble, but a barrel is 55 gallons

Don’t forget, those folks at the Oil Drum are peak oil advocates, and therefore considered crazy by most here at FR
