As soon as things are much more complicated now, reverse engineering in hi-tech sector might be just a little easier than building own product.
These Russian engines is a good example. They are absolete ‘70s tech and Chinese still unable to reproduce it just like they couldn’t build it from kits they got earlier so they switched to buy it assembled.
