I am on a mailing list of a guy who advocates retiring in banana republics. He particularly touts South American countries. His criteria seems to be that the local currency is the U.S. dollar and has good real estate prices. He says that most places in those countries are safe. He NEVER says how much money you should put away to pay local bribes and ransoms in case you are kidnapped or killed and your family wants to ship your body home—and get out themselves.
I think the parents are wrong in this case. Their son voluntarily went to live and work in a foreign country. He was not there as a representative of this country. I think in that case, the embassy is there to comfort and help the parents get the body of their son sent home, but I don’t see what else they can do.
If this person was building an apartment complex my guess is that he stepped on some union toes in the process, and forgot to keep up the baksheesh.
Ecuador has a socialist government. Peru is a much better choice. Chile and Argentina have high inflation, and their incredible snobbery makes the French seem humble. There are good and bad people everywhere, but Chile is more expensive than the US, and Argentina has suffered too many years of Socialism. Peru is a very cool country. Arequipa is a great city for the small town crowd.
Ummmmm, didnt we lose the war to The Duchy of Grand Fenwick?
Opps. Dad-dum it! You are right. That was another war we lost after WWII.
Now I have to dig out one of them Marx Bros movies to find a nation we can be on par with.
Dad-dum it!
