MSNBC = NBC. They have bureaus and affiliates that have been there for 50 years. FNC is still playing catch-up, and not really trying very hard; live coverage of breaking news isn't their raison d'etre.

They closed many of their bureaus in the news budget cutbacks of the 1980's.  They don't have nearly the same number of bureaus as CNN does, as CNN draws much of their international content from other international news organizations.

CNN firmly is third place, in a three horse race, seeks to not come out of the gate.

True. NBC has more US affiliates (though it's pretty close), but CNN has a stronger international presence. I don't know what kind of reach Sky News has, but FNC doesn't seem to use them much except for stories from the UK.

The BBC probably has more reporters in more places than anyone -- vestiges of the Empire. But they're kind of a funny case. Auntie Beeb is tax-supported, so their board of directors resists any expansion that benefits folks who don't pay the tax. The largest group of those is Americans.

Because of this, the BBC actually slowed down its growth on to the Web at a time when every other network was accelerating it. They still have a lot of good podcast material, though.

The other day I happened to be listening to NPR's hourly newscast and they had a story that originated from Washington, and they used the BBC Washington Correspondent to file the report.  I laughed.

CNN is trying to out-leftist MSNBC, since they have no hope of catching Fox. What a shame. I remember what CNN used to be... the finest news organization on Earth, period. And they threw it all away in the mid 90’s.
