“We tore up an axel or a drive plate, one of the two happened first. Down in the center of (Turns) 1 and 2 I just got back to the gas and the car felt like it had a flat tire. I don’t know. Something’s going on there where we’re chewing that stuff up and tearing it up. We’ve got to figure out why that’s happening they think it’s a material issue, so we’ll just have to see.”

The TV yakkers kept saying the axle break was probably caused by Jr revving the engine (spinning the tires) before it hit the pit box and the hard concrete surface at Fontana. That seemed to me like an odd explanation, since it didn't happen to a single other car during the race. And, besides, in watching the replay it didn't look to me as if he spun the tires much before hitting the ground.

Anyway, as you say, it is the SOS. And I hope to hear the verified explanation, if they can find out if the axle had a defect or what...

No - he commented way before hitting pit road that he blew the tire and said axle broke

When they showed the replay of the pit stop on TV I thought that as soon as the car dropped down from the left-side tire change Dale Jr’s tires were spinning/smoking for a quick exit. The tires suddenly stopped then I heard broken axle.

Someone help me out here - if the axle is broken how the heck are the tires gonna be spinning/smoking with the weight of the car on them?

It can spin up to the time it breaks, actually slightly after due to centrifugal force. Also, there is an axle on both sides. You can break one and continue driving, for a while anyway.

I know J.J. had one last year but other then the few that Jr. it doesn’t seem to have been an issue affecting the rest of the Hendrick cars.

It’s something they always seem to have some of on tracks with concrete pits. Much more bite that loads up the whole drive train from axles, to the differential, the driveshaft, and even the transmission.

Not really over it, but at work just the same.
