It is never a bad idea for a president to appear in a setting where he looks, well, presidential. As cynical as it sounds, there is a reason that nearly every president benefits from a war or national tragedy.
Obama standing on a stage while a hundred Republicans throw questions at him like students made him look presidential for the first time in perhaps a year.
Generally speaking, Presidents always do well when they cast themselves as the poor adult trying to control all these unruly children in the legislative branch.
I vote for #2.
I say have Rush Limbaugh moderate this event to be fair and TOTUS is NOT invited to attend.
Obama was free to say anything he wanted ranging from bending the truth to complete untruth with no ability for the questioner to counter what he said. The Republicans should have had the next questioner challenge what Obama said prior to asking his own question. That would have required a bit of thinking on one's feet, which I'm not sure any of them can do.
When GWB was President, at his press conferences or media interviews, he often had the same question asked over and over. Remember, "don't you want to apologize?" The Republicans were foolish to accept this format. The only thing good about it was that Obama did not dispute that his administration had claimed that Republicans had not presented any proposals, though he claims that he (the ONE) never said that they hadn't (which is at least a shading of the truth).

Try actually watching the event instead of letting the 0-bot press tell you what to think.

Thanks. I was going to ask for that.
You might want to try actually watching the video for a change.
My response was “Thank you”. I can see that was the wrong approach with you.
Actually I watched it last week on C-Span so I didn't need your links.
What a silly idea. A President does not debate anyone, it is “beneath”him—beneath the office I should say. In the rare event it might happen, he wouldn’t debate someone who does not hold office.
And EJ Dionne is a leftwing dork amongst other things.
Obambi would NEVER agree to an unmoderated, no-holds-barred debate!
Without a Chrissy Matthews or other lib moderator to protect him, why, somebody might ask some questions that he wouldn’t want to answer.
Let’s see ... Punahou, Occidental, Columbia, Harvard, Social Security numbers, draft registration, Indonesia, the Illinois Senate ... the list goes on!
In fact, with all he’s hiding, I don’t think he’ll even agree to debates when he is up for re-election.
Sorry E.J., You can’t go back to 2008.
You can’t have the President in a permanent campaign mode. He won, now he has to be President. His problem, he doesn’t know how to lead a government. He doesn’t know how to govern. He only knows how to campaign and tear down.
Don’t worry...you’ll see a Obama/Palin debate in 2012. You may even see an Obama/Hillary debate during the primary season, too!
