Looking at this from Senator Nelson’s shoes, his cleanest way out of his self-induced career-threatening mess is simple. After he has a few days to see how effective or ineffective his desperation ad was during Wednesday’s football game, he has a wonderful opportunity to save face by admitting that he severely misjudged his constituency, that the Democratic Party’s values of cornering and coercing senators into constituency sell-out votes with constitutionally questionable bribes is wrong, apologize, and seek membership in the Republican Party where he will be welcome to return to his previously stated position on the troubling aspects of this legislation and vote his convictions honestly in 2010, before it is too late.
He’s a man who has created a big problem for himself, his state, and his country. His party isn’t going to help him, so if the other major party is smart, they’ll offer him the help he needs.

You have perhaps never made acquaintance with Ben Nelson. The man’s arrogance towards his constituents is only surpassed by his ignorance of the Constitution.
