Maybe they were big government conservatives... certainly to the extent they promoted and still are defending GWB(some more than others). It leaves a conflict as they oppose Obama now.
One of the myths they are forced to claim is that GWB could have avoided the domestic spending path in 2004 and even 2005+2006, and instead ran the election themes “No socialism for you with with your tax money (at home in USA), but instead your tax money will be used to rebuild/reconstruct Iraq. ”. They have to claim that would have won those two elections.
If Bush had run on that theme (vs the all give-aways Rove strategy that won short term) then Kerry would have been elected president. These talk radio hosts knew it which is why we heard few complaints from them about Bush prior to 2005.
Wrong, Oba Mao has reversed many GWB policies: drilling and exploration, stem cells, Gitmo and many other WOT policies....
no one in the GOP is willing to step up to the plate and admit they were wrong, much less make the effort to reverse them.

Oh!brother didn't destroy our economy. Bush's policies and actions while in office did. Bush's actions during his first term to bring Mexican illegal aliens into the US banking system is what lead directly to the economic depression we're now suffering.
GWB has wounded us, but BO wants to hit us with the death blow.
The only thing that will happen in 2010 is that the GOP will, once again, pay lip service to being the party of 'smaller government'. But, when given control over both houses of Congress and the White House, they outspent Democrats by a wide margin.
If the US public does not realize that political favors are a slow acting poison, and assume its rightful role as master of the govt., that will be our fate.
