Sad to say, but this is how an awful lot of Hawaiians want it. They want to secede, they hate being a state.
They say that we haoles jailed their queen and took away their religion They mourn their statehood day, not celebrate it.
They are happy to have the haoles do all the work and pay the taxes. This has a lot to do with why they want to establish a native government that shuts the haoles out.
Just kill all the haoles (bang bang bang bang) and take their money (ka-ching) an everyting be awrigh’.
Public schools are a CORE function of government now? Wow. I was thinking national defense, rule of law (courts, police/ marshals), basic trade regulation, treaties, maybe a few big transportation-related things.
Kick all of them off Oahu, and let the rest of the state go. We'll keep the naval base. The Japanese can have the rest. After all, it's not like they can fight off a determined politically incorrect enemy
You can find 19-hour/week jobs here. Lots of ‘em. You can also find 19-hour/week over the counter jobs with 21-hour under-the-counter attached. 20 hours is the magic cutoff for not having to pay insurance. The government here makes it impossible for any NEW big business (e.g., the Superferry) and only the biggest (Wal-Mart, Target, etc) have deep enough pockets to fight the local politicos. Not to mention the regulations placed on small businesses, usually not enforced on places like the long-term Chinatown establishments but almost insurmountable for a new startup.
We’ve been to Kauai, Mauai, and the Big Island, courtesy of three different business trips. A fourth is in our future in 2011. Looking forward to it. While there we talked with employees and business owners and inquired with our own larger organization about setting up shop there. The consistent answer was there is almost no middle class in Hawaii. Not counting government employees (federal, state, local). One either lives in Hawaii with wealth earned or received elsewhere or one lives sort of a subsistence lifestyle - just above poverty level in a great climate. Big drug problem there, also. The elemetary school we visited, several years ago, on the Big Island, was in a constant state of lock down, due to wandering druggies prevalent in the local community. Lots of small time theft.
It’s my general observation this is the result of what has already been pointed out on this thread: Hawaii is America’s most socialistic state. It would appear that California and Maine are doing their best to catch up and overtake Hawaii’s #1 status as a state whose primary industry seems to be government jobs, nanny state regulations, over taxation of everything, and social welfare. Maine literally recruits government welfare recipients to move here. Just over 25% of Maine residents are on Medicaid. Then again, it’s not snowing right now in Hawaii, as it is here.
Colloquially, pure unadulterated manure from the male of the bovine species.
You nailed it. His last election was a joke. The locals vote for him because he's been there forever and there tends to still be a degree of respect for ones elders here, though not as strong as it was even 10 or 15 years ago.
AS long as there are no cuts to record keeping.
Coming to a socialist state near you soon. California is just about to topple.
We don’t have universal health care.
Employers are required by law to provide health care to employees who work over 20 hours per week.
There are a lot of part time jobs.
