The problem is not Republicans or Democrats - it’s us!

Speak for yourself, dude.

I don't expect ANY politician to "bring home the bacon." I buy my own.

The problem is THEM, and by THEM I mean OVERWHELMINGLY Democrat voters.

Quit trying to equate Republicans and Democrats here. You're just wrong.

The great majority of the time, it IS Democrats.

I would love to agree with you, but it’s apparent that all politicians are engaged in giving goodies to their constituents.

When Inhofe was running for re-election here in red state OK, his ads were often about all the pork he had brought home to our state. I called his office to complain about the ads, and the nice lady told me that’s what he has to do to be re-elected.

Walter Williams has often been urged to run for office, but he always asks people how far they think he would get when he told folks that he would not do any favors for his constituents.

How many Republicans send their kids to government schools? Or accept government loans for college? Or eagerly participate in so-called economic development programs for their city or state? Or benefit from having a government facility in their area? Or accept agricultural subsidies while ranting about welfare queens? We won’t give up our largesse, because we want our “fair” share, too.

Hey, I’m with you. We homeschooled our kids and prefer to just have government leave us alone, but that’s not how it works. Nobody, even Republicans, is willing to give up his particular government benefit and can usually find a way to justify it.

BTW, not that it matter, but I am a dudette - a grandma dudette, to be precise. ;-)

Well, Ms. Dudette, you've been busy! You've managed to research ALL politicians!

There's a world of difference between funding public schools at a reasonable level and giving corrupt political payouts to targeted constituency groups.

Some things are supposed to be paid for with taxes, else the Constitution would have simply forbidden them entirely. To lump ALL taxpayer-funded activities together and brand them ALL as pork-barrel politics is false and lazy.

Some government spending is pork; some is not. Some voters cast their votes for "goodies", and some do not.

Please don't be fast and loose with grouping everything and everyone together.

Ouchie!

Well, we will have to disagree then. There is nothing in the Constitution that authorizes the funding of education. Any time the government takes money from one citizen to provide for the needs or wants of another, that is playing Santa with someone else’s money.

The legitimate function of government is to protect us from criminals at home and threats from outside. Anything else is merely legalized theft.

Isn't protecting your neighbor from criminals socialism then? After all, everyone (more or less) is paying for the protection of the whole.

Looks like the military and the police are socialist too!

How about the fire department? Socialist?

Public streets? Water? Sewer?
