Great post. My Dad was a BUFF driver. He always marveled at the Blackbird.

Great story with the added reminder of airspeed and altitude being key to becoming an old pilot.

I always admired Buff drivers and crew. I rode on one a couple of times. Salutes for your dad.

"they now had 107 feet of fire-breathing titanium in their face as the plane leveled and accelerated, in full burner, on the tower side of the infield, closer than expected, maintaining what could only be described as some sort of ultimate knife-edge pass."

We’ve got one here in Ohio, too, at the USAF Museum at Wright-Pat.

Great story, and huzzahs to one of the most spectacular machines ever created by man.

Good ole RAF Mildenhall. You could always find crazy Brits plane spotting at the end of the runway in “Spy corner”.

That’s a good story. Very good.

Actually that is the M-21 which is a two seat version of the A-12 which was the forerunner to the Air Force SR-71. ;>

I consulted in Dayton, probably spent four or five afternoons in the AF museum, and still didn’t see everything...
If you get a chance, do visit, but, if you’re a military aircraft nut, be prepared to be overwhelmed. Take lots of film and/or extra batteries.
I like jets (F-5 being my favorite), but the Spitfire was just unreal...
As I said, if you can, just go! One of everything is there.

We go every year, (live just west of Columbus) and you’re right, almost impossible to appreciate it in one day.
