I’d give them freedom from all taxes...and we mainlanders also have freedome from giving them medicare, medicade, social security, welfare, etc. Fair deal.

Perhaps we only need 49 states (or 56 in President Obama’s math.)

Can we put them on the reservation and keep them there?

As long as the U.S. no longer has to spend money on them, give them an island and let them be as Hawaiian as they would like to be.

Amen, brother! If the natives don’t like us, then we will keep our money and let them become another enlightened tropical island chain. I will not set foot on their islands until they decide to be Americans, again.

Proponents say the plan would duplicate the legal scenario set up for Native Americans...

Right, because that's worked out so well.

"If ethnic Hawaiians can be accorded tribal status, why not Chicanos in the Southwest? Or Cajuns in Louisiana?"

Uhm, because those are not distinct ethnicities.

Oh, and I don't care for the Akaka bill.

Hawaii has 8 major islands, so we could turn each one into a state and that would give us 57. Just imagine 14 more democrats in the senate!

If we dump Hawaii does Akaka go with it?

IIRC all it would take is one great-great-grandparent. Pro’ly have to show your birth certificate, though.

We stole that state fair and square. In the 1850s or something. It was still legal then.

/tongue in cheek

Lived in HI for 3 years - the native racism is well known to all whites, Japs, and others. When I was there, the self proclaimed natives would take over state parks and live there year round. God help the wayward white that would stumble into a HI state park. They stayed drunk most of the day. Don’t have a clue how they got money. Sen Inoyu passed legislation the last year I was there prohibiting DoD from discharging any main land service members in HI. This forced us to go through discharge in Camp Pendleton. Hate the little HI hitlers. Aloha - Shaka Bro - eat Sh*T and die.

Can’t I just direct them to my website, where they can view my Certification of Live Birth?

We did this up here. Don’t do it, or you’ll pay the consequences. Horrible situation. Whatever you do, don’t do like the Indian act and distribute benefits based on race.

If native Hawaiians are “Indians,” then why don’t they do the same for the Chamorros of Guam and the Northern Marianas Islands, and for the Samoans of American Samoa? Same logic.
