On January 19th, a special election will be held to fill a Senate seat that has been controlled by the Kennedy family since 1953.
And uncle "Honey Fitz" was also in politics before that.

There are multiple reasons - this is from observation - I’ve never lived in MA but my in-laws do (they’re conservatives).

First, you do have the legitimate limousine libs in Cambridge, Concord, etc...

Secondly, and this is the big one, you have what I refer to as “hereditary Democrats.” Many of these people, if you talk to them, are actually at least moderately conservative on most issues - but they “grew up Dem” and NOTHING seems to change them. Even though they oppose a lot of individual liberal issues, they seem to think that all Democrats are like JFK, who, at least on fiscal issues and defense, was what many people today would consider a right-leaning moderate or even conservative in some ways.

Obviously for the Kennedy name itself, this effect is doubled.

There is a guy named Kennedy who at least tried to run on the Libertarian ticket, but I don’t think he’s on the ballot.

There is a problem even in the GOP itself, that “conservatism” has come to mean social issues only. That is NOT the Reagan legacy, despite what some people (Huck supporters, etc) try to make us think.

However, in the rural parts of MA - LOTS of people are gun owners and seem to be of the opposite view - fiscally pretty conservative, pro-gun, but still vote Dem for social reasons.

There’s a helpless feeling when you live somewhere surrounded by idiots, and, for the time being, are unable to leave for personal or economic reasons.

Therefore, the best you can do is try to change it.

We have to remember that a RINO in Texas is a rock-ribbed conservative in Massachusetts, and act accordingly.

Giuliani for example. For President, he was a poor choice - but I’ll probably donate to him if he runs for NY Senate. There are positions where a guy like him can be useful, and moreso than the alternative.

However, if he were running in Ohio it would be a different story, and if he were running in Utah, he’d be laughed off the stage.

There’s a guy that works down the road from the bank I work in who is a client. His car has an “O” sticker that looks like an Obama ‘O’ but in fine print underneath it has the word “SHIT” (mods please forgive me.)

Hilarious and subtle until you read it!

OK Scotsman, that's enough! I'm the one who started this thread, so if you have a problem, you have it with me!! I simply offered the notion that Massachusetts (a very liberal state) has an election where if the Republican wins, we all win. How could you possibly have a problem with that?

Free Republic is a place where conservatives come together to try to figure out how to defeat the liberal socialist bastards who are trying to destroy this country.

Fighting among ourselves only gives the enemy strength.

If I said anything here to offend you.. I apologize.

If the fact that I am a conservative from Massachusetts offends you, for that I WILL NOT apologize!!!

You and I are supposed to be on the same team.

So which is it?

Do you and I continue to bitch at one another over pointless regional differences, or do we play it smart, unite, and beat the liberal socialist bastards whom we both despise?

I want to beat the liberal socialist bastards. Are you with me?

Right.

200+ years ago, the British tried to disarm the colonists which lead to the first shots of the Revolution.

Today, political elites in Ma did what the British failed: disarmed the citizens. and they did this because it was what a majority in Ma wanted.

Don’t expect that seat to leave the Democrat party - and if it does, it will be the new Arlen Specter or Olympia Snowe taking it.

I would LOVE to be optimistic here - but this Healthcare has passed the Senate with NO support from people on the left or right.

Our government no longer follows the will of the people. If it stays this way for too long, there will be NO GOING BACK....

"Our government no longer follows the will of the people. If it stays this way for too long, there will be NO GOING BACK....

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security"

I believe that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America are Divine documents.

A bold statement? Yes.

But these documents were written by men of faith who were driven by, and protected by, Divine Providence.

Why should we consider ourselves any different?

We are (to borrow a term from Obama) on the "CUSP" of servitude. For the first time in the history of this Republic, our government is preparing to impose a TAX for simply being alive! Not a tax on tea, or a tax on stamps, but a tax on life!!!

Is this not tyranny in its purest form?

Is this not the absolute Despotism under which our Declaration states it is our DUTY to throw off?

In this thread, there has been a lot of arguing and disagreement. But there is one fact which was as true 200 years ago as it is now:

“OK Scotsman, that’s enough!”
I see that you are a teacher of some sort. Keep your condencension and lecturing tones for your students.

“A freeper asked why the voters of Mass kept sending such luminaries like Kennedy, Frank, Kerry, etc back to the congress. He was, of course, referring to the voters who voted for these fine specimens. Not those who voted against them. Are we clear so far? My response was “cuz they’re dumbasses and want to be slaves”. Do you think that refers to those who voted for liberals or those who voted against those fine people?”
From an earlier post to another Mass freeper. What’s your response? That I think conservative voters who voted against liberals are dumbasses and want to be slaves?

“I simply offered the notion that Massachusetts (a very liberal state) has an election where if the Republican wins, we all win. How could you possibly have a problem with that?”
Don’t have a “problem” with that. Please point out to me where I had a “problem” with that.

“If I said anything here to offend you.. I apologize.”
Apology accepted.
For my part, I will be more clear when corresponding with you folks from Mass.
