A consistently biting dog is not protective, they are mean. I have a 3 y/o German Shepherd who is protective but not mean, he runs circles around people and barks, and like your Labs, has never bitten anyone. I have never known a Labrador Retriever to be mean unless they were abused or abandoned somehow.

Jokes abound (and rightly so, I suppose), but this is just another case of too much government. Taxpayers have to pay for the absurd actions of the Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control officials and others like them.

I guess a sign warning about the dogs would be tacky.

Any dog can be vicious without being beaten or abandoned. All it takes is an owner that isn’t interested in providing proper care for the dog (ie, letting it run around loose, chaining it up, not getting it neutered, not providing socialization and training, etc.) Most dog attacks are from dogs that are in this category, all breeds considered, according to the CDC.

You are correct, I should have included neglect as well. A dog is a big responsibility that too many people take too lightly.
