I’m just vaguely familiar with the Folding process....do I assume one is not helping if the computer is totally shut down (as is my habit when not using)?

Yes, that is correct. You can turn you monitor off either by the switch or by disabling the screen saver and having the monitor turn itself off.
If you are in the habit of shutting down the computer, please make sure that you are running the CPU console version 6.23. That version is fast and can crunch most protein segments on a fast computer within the deadlines, even if shut down overnight.
