Most folks up here are schizoid: they live personally conservative lives and vote Liberal. The genetic stock you reference brought the Farm Co-operative Movement here. There is a culture of being nice, fair, and tolerant. This is easily manipulated, as can be seen in the actions of many mainstream Protestant churches in regards to immigration, government-provided benefits and acceptance of variant sexual practices within the church leadership, itself. There is also a huge population of real leftists. In Minnesota, they are the DFL. In the urban areas, the unions run everything, along with minorities. In my area of SW Wisconsin, there are a lot of old hippies, some with trust funds, many tied to the Progressive Movement via organic farming. They have been steadily increasing power via organizing over the past 30 years. At one point in the late 1970s to early 1990s, we had several scions of well-known billionaire families who moved here expressly to organize for the left. Government has bought off the organic movement, but they paid for it with contributions, organizing for progressive issues and outright peer pressure.
On a slight positive note, a friend of ours who has daily interaction with the general public told us that he encountered 7 zerO voters with extreme remorse over the past week. Most of them, when asked WHY they voted for the zerO, said:”I hated Bush.”
