I used to idolize Merle Haggard.
Over the last decade, I have come around to your view.
My moment of enlightenment was when Merle Haggard started making sleazy “how to get out of credit card debt” commercials. Boy was THAT a rude awakening from a guy I thought was an old school America First conservative.
