Note to self: Use dull rusty blade.

A reasonable compromise.

But even burglars don't deserve to be killed with a razor-sharp sword.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree.

The writer of this editorial lives in a “Bambi” World.

He should have been born 5 centuries ago when they sliced and diced with swords

Some while back in Chicago a similar situation took place. A machinist was out in the shop in his garage when three or so punks caused a disturbance outside. He went outside and told them to get lost, when one pulled a gun on him. He sliced the assailant up with a very nice Roman short sword that he made himself. He demonstrated what he did for a TV news spot, and nobody that I know of did anything but pat him on the back. Cops, reporters, all positive toward private swordsmanship.

Its writers generally side with evil...

Yes, they do, and it's generally out of a desire to show how broad-minded they are, which translates to a feeling of superiority over those of us expressing lowly "conventional" opinion. The author is welcome to his feeling of moral superiority. I'll settle for my gun.

“But even burglars don’t deserve to be killed with a razor-sharp sword”

Good thinkng.

A dull sword would likely give them more time to consider the error of their ways before the big sleep.

But even burglars don't deserve to be killed with a razor-sharp sword. And Mr. Pontolillo - whose thinking may have been clouded by the adrenaline rush of fear, panic and anger - must now spend the rest of his life grappling with the anguish and remorse of having snuffed out another's life.

There is anguish, only if you allow it. Anguish brought on by the law enforcement is certain but, unless you are some drizzle twit, you will feel an overwhelming sense of joy and relief that you will see the sun come up again.

The author mainly was pointing out(after a few chosen sob story sentences)that this situation could have been handled differently, which means he thinks the perp shouldn't have been killed. First of all he has no way of knowing what really happened and whether violence was the only way out or not. Secondly, anyone, and I mean ANYONE, who breaks into someone's house with intent to steal, rob, maim or kill(any or all of the previous)deserves whatever happens to them. The home owner should feel no guilt, he didn't ask for the situation, it was thrust upon him and if a person has never been in that situation they have no right to judge someone who has been and who has killed what could have been their killer if they had hesitated.

BTW, the victim(the real victim)did retreat at first but the guy followed him, too bad for the perp.

This is a textbook example of why most of Baltimore is such a disgusting hell hole of a place. The evil has taken over the city, and it runs the newspaper.

One of the folks in FR's Hobbit Hole calls the place "BaltiMordor".

Exactly, because if they manage to get away, you know damn well, they will do it again.

There WERE better alternatives: (1) 12 gauge, .45, 9mm, and so on; or (2), offer the intruder a free cab ride to the far richer and easier pickings at the homes of violence abjuring members of the Baltimore Sun editorial board.

The anonymous author of this editorial and the editors of the Baltimore Sun say nothing about their outrage over this man being free to prey upon the citizenry. Rather than point out another epic fail by the State they sentimentally weep over the hypothetical feelings of loss and sadness of those unfortunate enough to have to make such life and death decisions.

Mr. Pontolillo was entirely blameless in this death and should suffer not even a second of remorse.

Donald Rice killed himself and the State of Maryland was his accomplice for releasing a career criminal after 29 convictions.

“But even burglars don’t deserve to be killed with a razor-sharp sword.”

One wonders whether the ickle presstitute would have preferred the sword be a dull one instead of a razor sharp one?

“I don’t believe that the use of deadly force to protect property is appropriate.”

The Founders disagreed with you.

Would their idea that if ever property was seen as less than semi-sacred, “...then horrid mischief would ensue”.

May I point out that “Horrid Mischief” sits in the White House?

Lived in Baltimore. Doubt if author even works at the Baltimore Sun building-too risky, especially at night. Baltimore, a murder a day keeps reporters and everyone else away. No wonder Bill and Melinda gates took their charity money elsewhere rather than waste it in a place like Charm City.
