Romans 13:4 reads: ".. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a mininster of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon the one who practices evil."

One might argue that "it" above refers only to the government. Well, this country is a Constitutional Republic and both States and local jurisdictions have authorized citizens to act their behalf, exercizing lethal force, if need be, in defense of themselves or innnocent third parties.

To clarify further, the people, the rightful sovereigns in this country, have retained their right of self-defense in the face of criminal depradation. We '"rulers" are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil.' (Romans 13:3)

I will, sadly, agree with the BSun.

It is a shame that the People’s Republic of Maryland ignores the Second Amendment and infringes on the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

It is a shame that as a result, this decent citizen only had a sword available to do the job that the state should have done for him in one of the criminal’s many previous arrests, instead of having a proper firearm to defend himself from a criminal who should not have been free.

Fortunately, the citizen in question seems to have taken advice from a book that the editors of the BSun have never heard of: “And the one who has no sword must go out and buy one.”

I read this article this AM and I think this writer wants the student to feel some burden of guilt for killing a person. Well he didn’t kill a person, he killed pond-scum. No different from being in war and killing the enemy.

The thief CHOSE his demise. He took a risk with a 99% chance of capture or death. He tossed the dice and got “snake eyes.” Bye bye scum of the earth. I pity the mother who bore you.

The student ended a crime spree. He has a right to be elated that he helped thousands of other people who will not be burglarized or worse by this thief. Is he a hero? Yes and No. But he IS alive to tell his tale.

But even burglars don't deserve to be killed with a razor-sharp sword.

Would Pravda-on-the-Patapsco like some cheese with that whine?

And Mr. Pontolillo - whose thinking may have been clouded by the adrenaline rush of fear, panic and anger - must now spend the rest of his life grappling with the anguish and remorse of having snuffed out another's life.

If I were hime, I wouldn't, especially when it's a beautiful day outside. Relax, Mr. Pontolillo, you have made Baltimordor ever so slightly safer for your fellow humans.

He doesn't deserve any sympathy.

But he was just beginning to turn his life around!

Concealed sword permits for everyone.

Permits? That's the second step down the road to where we are today! Permits are where government tells you what you can or cannot do or have.

Allow everyone (including ex-cons) to be on an equal footing with criminals and free to own weapons and you instantly get rid of purchase limitations, background checks, waiting times etc. BUT... hold everyone responsible for the proper use of their weapons and come down hard on the misuse.

Sometimes you have to make exceptions.

Honestly, if the guy had had a gun, he probably would have used it.

The burglar, Donald D. Rice, wouldn't ordinarily deserve much sympathy. He was a career criminal with a long record of thefts. He had just gotten out of prison the previous Saturday after serving six months for a conviction in Baltimore County. By all accounts he was neither an admirable character nor an innocent victim.

He still doesn't deserve much sympathy.

But even burglars don't deserve to be killed with a razor-sharp sword.

How do they deserve to die then?

With a sword, it’s quiet, quick, and nothing flying around.

Well, there was the small matter of a severed hand...;'}

And the bleeding to death part, which is probably not a small matter when it comes to cleaning it up.

If you’re going to get a katana, don’t buy it off the shopping channel.

The severed body parts are a bit of a tripping hazard.

I can tolerate it as long as they clean up after themselves.

Who says Mr. Pontolillo will have any remorse? I certainly wouldn't.

You'd be surprised - my cousin shot the son-in-law who was beating his pregnant daughter (not even a thought of charges being filed) and had a very difficult time living with having taken even such a worthless life as that.
