I remember the first time I heard the term "progressive" used very clearly. It was back in the early 1980's, during a discussion of the Khmer Rouge atrocities of the 1970's documented in the movie "The Killing Fields".

A news journalist had asked Jane Fonda to comment on these atrocities, after her years of calling American soldiers war criminals. Fonda refused to comment, stating that she didn't think it would be appropriate for her to speak critically of what she referred to as "progressive regimes".

There's yer sign, folks. When you hear the word "progressive", think of the Khmer Rouge wing of what we used to call "liberals".
