>>Desmarais, backed by New England and national racing pigeon associations, turned to state Rep. Michael Rodrigues, a Democrat whose district includes Westport and some parts of Fall River, to file a bill that would require all pigeons used in films shot in Massachusetts to be licensed and tagged within the state.
“These individuals, they enjoy their hobby of racing pigeons,” Rodrigues said. “If there’s a potential threat we can alleviate to protect their investment, we should.” He was confident that bill will pass.

Nice. Very important issue.

Whitey Bulger needs his candles blown out
By Howie Carr | Thursday, September 3, 2009 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

Whitey Bulger turns 80 today, which is a damn shame, because he should have been strapped into Old Sparky decades ago.

Today, let’s get a fresh perspective on “the more terrible crimes,” as his brother, the Corrupt Midget, once described them.

U.S. District Court Judge William G. Young conducted a bench trial this summer in which the survivors of three of Whitey’s 20-plus victims sued the federal government. They were seeking damages caused by the murders of their loved ones by the FBI’s prized Top Echelon informant.

These three victims were Louis Litif, another wiseguy, and two of Stevie Flemmi’s girlfriends, Deb Davis and Deb Hussey, who was also the daughter of Stevie’s common-law wife.

In a hearing July 24, Young went over in detail exactly how Whitey, the FBI’s go-to guy, dispatched his victims. Let’s start with Litif, who was lured to Triple O’s barroom in 1980 after Whitey was told by an FBI agent on his payroll that Louie was about to rat him out. This is how the judge described Litif’s death:

“He was stabbed repeatedly . . . with a sharp icepick-type implement and then he was shot in the back of the head. . . . It was the intent, sadistically, to inflict pain upon Mr. Litif before dispatching him . . . (the wounds) were in fact intended to be and were painful and were accompanied by the near certainty that Bulger and (another hood) were going to kill Litif and Litif well understood it.”

Next we come to Deb Davis, Stevie Flemmi’s longtime girlfriend, still in her 20’s. In 1982, Stevie delivered her unto Whitey, who strangled her:

“Death by asphyxiation is not immediate . . . In the space of about three minutes, she must have known, whatever the horror of being grabbed from behind by, to her, an unknown assailant, when Flemmi did not come to her aid, that he intended that she die and that certainty, terrible as it must have been, was with her until she lost consciousness. . . . She had a life to live, until Bulger killed her.”

Finally, the murder of Deb Hussey in 1985. Like Deb Davis she was strangled by Whitey, with one additional atrocity: “There is the added detail of the crushing of her chest by his legs.”

Then the judge got into why Flemmi and Bulger did away with her.

“ She was killed for no better reason, and it’s no reason at all, than that she was an annoyance to Flemmi . . . She, Deborah, kept wheedling him for money and he had her killed.”

By Whitey. At least Flemmi is locked up for life. Whitey is still a free man.

‘Foston’ mayor debate one for the brooks
By Howie Carr | Friday, September 4, 2009 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

Cripes, what’s this world coming to when Mumbles Menino can actually win a live debate on TV?

But that’s exactly what happened Wednesday night. OK, so he won by default. The mayor of Boston - or, as he pronounced it on Ch. 4, “Foston” - didn’t give his three opponents any pre-preliminary-election ammo.

Actually, laff-wise Mumbles was a bit of disappointment, especially after his monologue Friday night at the JFK Library. That was when he referred to the “history brooks” where he read about Ted Kennedy’s grandfather, “Honey Fritz,” or was it “Honey Futz?”

But hey, you can’t bring your ‘A’ game every night. Not even Thomas “Memimo,” as the young priest at Teddy’s wake called him.

Poor Mike Flaherty. James Michael Curley once said that posing as a reformer was tiresome work, and boy, did Baby Flats look tired during the debate. He came across like this year’s Tom Reilly. How long do you suppose he has to wear that shirt with the too-big collar before he wins the bet?

Afterwards, down at Florian Hall, I’m sure the boyos were drowning their sorrows, not that Local 718 ever really needs an excuse for a wee small taste of the creature. What a bummer the debate must have been for Baby Flats’ fans at Tom English’s - when they talk about one of their own pulling a slip-and-fall, this isn’t what they meant.

Let’s go straight to the videotape, but if you’re looking for Sam Yoon swoons, you’ve come to the wrong newspaper, OK? Come spring semester, Sam’s gonna fit in great at Camelot High.

Here comes Mumbles:

“Jobs. We’re in the green jobs era. Now how do we create more jobs for the future and on in the green issue, let me tell ya, this is about the future. We’ve done a lot with green job training. We continue to move Foston forward.”

Moving Foston Forward - Vote Menino.

Here is the mayor summing up his vision: “Boston about results and tell ya what the departments are doin’ when it comes to results and, uh, goals and how they’re meetin’ those results and goals.”

On the schools: “When it come to public education, we’re makin’ progress.” On police details: “So the details - there’s a lot of conversation about that. But why do we protect the State Police and why do we have the Boston Police?”

Let the record show, none of the three challengers was able to answer Mumbles’ question.

On revitalizing Foston - er, Boston’s economy: “We’re creatin’ more people to come into our city.”

On city finances: “Lemme just tell ya, the city is been lowest - we’ve had the highest bond rating of any of our city ever in the past. Why? Cuz we know how to manage our city well.”

Sam Yoon did try to trip him up once. He used a big word - antithetical. The viewers all held their breath, waiting for Mumbles to lash back, “What’d youse call me?”

But it was not to be. And now at City Hall they’re chanting “Four more years!” And at Florian Hall the dirge is “Four more beers!”

Howie is Relentless on Menino.

The Mumble segments are one of the best he does...it is somewhat difficult to drive and cry at the same time :)
