They’re not trucks and SUV’s. They’re future “clunkers”.
Wait a minute — I can buy an F-150 under cash for clunkers?
Can’t be!
In other words, people are looking for a bug out vehicle for when it hits the fan.
President Obama, who had been hammering Congress for action, said the program "has been a proven success: The initial transactions are generating a more than 50% increase in fuel economy; they are generating $700 to $1000 in annual savings for consumers in reduced gas costs alone; and they are getting the oldest, dirtiest and most air-polluting trucks and SUVs off the road for good."
Myself, I’m glad to see people buying Ford more than Obama motors.
It’s true. And other big’uns as well.
All it has to get is 2 miles better mpg than your present car to qualify for $3500, and if it gets 5 miles better mpg (I think that’s the figure) then you get $4500.
We have a 1997 Toyota 4 Runner, and we could get $3500 to turn it in for a new one, because the newer ones get better gas mileage than the older 4Runners.
The whole universe is laughing at us over this one.
Ford Escape
4 Fords...
Could it be those "Freepers" that said they wouldn't buy anything else?
Use the money to nix Obama's fav's GM and Chrysler.....
Schadenfreude Baby..
Too bad about the two UAW/Fiats and two Government Motors vehicles.
I had heard that six of the top ten were Hondas, Toyotas or Hyundais. I wonder if that is true depending on how you count it or if it was just BS to begin with.
Well...it is named Escape.
You can buy it cheaper next year after it's repossessed.
More than likely it is just cannibalizing sales from future months. The tumbleweeds will be blowing through dealer's lots again by October.
when you have a clunker, you are not so attached to it....
The gas mileage requirements in the Clunker law are much more lenient for trucks and SUVs compared to cars. A lot of folks who own old trucks and SUVs are naturally going to be inclined to purchase the same type vehicle. It’s a no brainer if you have an old truck/SUV and are in the market for a new one.
:How does that effect; Charities, Small Business/Junk Yards etc.
The unintended consequences are mind-boggling...
This is not going to work for most people. If your present car is worth more than $4500 you lose. You should otherwise just sell it on the open market or trade it in. This is not in addition to the trade-in value. See Edmunds for the skinny on how this works.
