A lot of them are, but a lot aren’t. Emergency rooms often just end up telling people to make an appointment with a doctor, which they rarely do if they don’t have any kind of insurance. Eligibility for Medicaid has some hoops to jump through — some deadbeats simply don’t qualify, and many of them can’t be bothered to sign up. Under the new scheme, they’ll basically be forced to get insurance, at our expense — the minute it’s discovered they don’t have it (whether at an ER, soup kitchen, jail where they’re spending the night for the zillionth time on a drunk-and-siorderly arrest, etc), some taxpayer-salaried worker will be summoned to sign them up immediately.
Thanks for the ping!
Great article. I am a physician too.
After President Obama’s press conference when he called doctors crooks because they remove tonsils and the police stupid I walked over to a policeman friend and said: “Hey stupid do you want me to take out your tonsils?”
