While the state of Michigan is in the doldrums, to put it mildly, those of us who are fortunate to live and make a living in northern Michigan already know that we have our own slice of Heaven. We are blessed to live where lakes and rivers abound surrounded by hilly terrain and woodlands. Where the average motorist on their commute to work worries more about hitting a deer than being hit by a stray bullet. Where fresh air and for the most part small town values are still the norm. Having grown up in metro Detroit, but living for the past 29 years in northern Michigan I consider myself lucky beyond belief.

Man Rule #33890

When your location is closer to the most southern point of Michigan than the most northern point, you cannot say you are in Northern Michigan.

I spent many years growing up in Harbor Springs, Michigan.

Wonderful place.

Haven’t been there but knew a top-drawer musician in high school who attended. He was barely fit to pour iced tea in the camp cafeteria.

It is FIERCE competition even though it has an idyllic setting and strict rules.

Interlochen and Hillsdale are both in Michigan. Why can’t the rest of the state emulate their successes through high standards rather than rely on the now defunct liberal-union axis model?

There's only one bridge to cross that will get you officially "Up North".

I personally like “Up North” Some of my fondest memories are there. I especially like Traverse City and the peninsula. And to top it all off, My son went to Hillsdale. The best money I ever spent.

Near Alpena? We are on the other side of the state; about 45 minutes south of Interlochen.

No way! North of Clare starts “up north” for the lower penninsula. The upper penninsula is a whole other animal.

I like that part of Michigan. I spent a few nice days in Grayling some years ago.

I don’t think I could live there, but it is a lovely place to visit.

I am trying to recall the local name given to the meat pies in the up. Now those were excellent!
