Mark Steyn on why the fascists are winning in Europe

I think Steyn views it differently than you do. Steyn would point out that for the UK, while the Labour vote fell 6.9 percentage points and for that matter the Liberal Democrats saw their vote fall by 1.2 percentage points yet the conservative vote only rose 1 percentage point.

Steyn’s point is that the center left parties are losing votes, but they are going to the extremes not the center right parties. Steyn argues that is because the center right parties wont talke about the issues the people care about and by doing so they are manufacturing fascist votes.

I have seen Steyn make this point on the UK and have now verified it. You can verify or dispute how accurate this analysis is for other countries. I did check the Czech Republic and the ODS vote stayed the same percentage and the gainer was the Social Democrats. Are the Social Democrats a “fringe” party? So far I have found they have roots in the 1930s and earlier Social Democrats Workers Party and they actually led a coalition government in recent times.

To comment on the substance of the article ... It's unfortunate that the 2 dominant parties in the U.S. ahave rigged the process so steeply against 4rd parties. Otherwise there might be some hope for the future of this former Republic.

I would guess that Steyn would say the US two major parties by ruling some discussions and opinions out of bounds including some of the same opinions that are out of bounds in Europe might be creating fascists or other 3rd party voters. Time will tell.
