>>Points well taken, Munz. And, although every player in the Watergate maelstrom had their own perspective of events, I think you may agree with me that it (The Watergate saga) was a very dismal period in our national life.<<

Absolutely. I think one more effect that isn’t spoken about of that fiasco is that people more or less “expected” politicians to be dirty from that point on.
That maybe why Clinton got away with what he did, more than anything else. It helped to desensitize Americans to political corruption.

Please, indulge me if you will a moment and envision a political scene where Watergate had not occurred, but Nixon was defeated in say a 50/5 type election. Everything else remained the same.

Would America really have stood for Cointon’s antics? I don’t think so. Nor do I think that they would stand for Obama’s. So in fact, Watergate, although nothing compared to what Obama has done, was worse in “shock” value and gave liberals a lot of twisting room when it comes to “values” and “integrity”. In that sense, it was the worst thing ever to happen to the country. It allowed us to accept corruption at some level in politics.

>>However, I am tragically saddened by the lack of interest by the large segment of our citizenry in their own survival. And, in the final analysis, we reap what we sow. I will not live to see our cultural and political eclipse, but it is not too far in the distance.<<

Firstly, I hope you live not only to see it, but also to see the correction of it. It is coming, I agree, but that shock will wake people up to some degree. But first things have to get bad enough that they can not watch “American idol” and “dancing with the stars”.

They have to realize that instead of dialing some number to pick their favorite reality television personality, that they will have to call congress and make some noise.
That this stuff matters. Until then, it is nothing but a popularity contest that doesn’t matter after the levers are pulled, until next time.
