Strange choices for answers, I know. But for a while readers were allowed to submit their own.

Not only should government help homeowners avoid foreclosure, but it should also repay gamblers who have lost money in Las Vegas and reimburse the losses of fools who fall for the Nigerian bank swindle.

No, but the government officials who forced the lenders into bad lending should, i.e., Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, etc.

Hell no! The more government funnels aid to the people least able to repay and most likely to go into foreclosure the soonest, then the more likely that those people not chosen for aid (but still swimming in negative equity) are likely to throw in the towel and walk away, even if they can afford repayment. Moving forward, it’s nothing but a recipe for wholesale destruction of personal responsibility and a viable economy.

I didn't?

It's an Orange County register poll; it's not mine.

I would have included "Yes, only is Obama resigns first!"

Yes.

The government should pay off my mortgage completely and let me live in my house tax-free.

Having bought homes in several states I thought I was somewhat savvy in the process.

My most recent home purchase showed me how wrong I was and how incredibly overwhelmed a first or second time buyer can become, even with an ethical realtor and mortgage broker.

In my most recent situation I discovered that I was novel for the brokers since I was their first native English speaker and raised several red flags during the process. My realtor actually resigned from the broker mid deal with no notice. Things worked out but not without a lot of problmes and threats from me.

Imagine if I was first time Spanish speaking buyer?

I’ve also recently met people who have been duped by unscrupulous mortagage companies that actually search out those with weak credit and payment history with offers to ‘help’ them but seek only to entrap them. Yes. Really.

I don’t think gov’t should be bailing out anyone but since they are and we don’t have choice on it, would seem better to bail the mortgage companies via the homeowner.

As it is now, the banks got theirs and the homeowner will still lose his.

Yes, as long as Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and a few others are paying it directly out of their own pockets.

If someone owes 170% of what their house is worth, why do they want to stay in that situation? They're going to be under water for 15 years. Wanting that is as dumb as getting into the situation in the first place.

The government should offer "sell your soul" loans: you can have the bail out but you can never get out from repaying it, plus interest and property taxes, else face life in a prison labor camp, ie, become a slave of the socialist state. The sad thing is most people would be stupid enough to take the deal.

Although it sounds good. The government has no right to our money to perform this act of charity. If individuals or neighbors want to help a friend avoid foreclosure that is fine, but not the government. It isn’t their business.
