Well, not exactly "all of Eastern Europe" since large chunks of it were retained by Christians (although at the time I'm not sure the Orthodox actually thought Roman Catholics were really Christians).

What's important to know is that there is a belief fairly common in Islamic circles that IF a piece of ground or water had ever been under Islamic control for even a day then it is irredeemably part of the Islamic world (or "Dar al-Islam").

Obama is expressing an Islamic belief in this proposal.

Why not? The State Dept. position is that Jews having children on the West Bank (some 9000 last year) is a grave threat to peace and that no expansion of housing there must be allowed to accommodate them.

(I guess on that basis the State Dept. would have insisted Joseph and Mary go somewhere else to have their child.)
