That's a great strategy.

BTW, what was his military background again, i.e which branch of service did he serve or where was his combat missions?

What’s amazing is North Korea was able to develop their atomic weapons and delivery systems in the few months since Obama took office.

Your joking, right?

It is for several reasons. Create even more of a common enemy (USA and Japan) so as to lessen an internal divisions and dissent within DPRK. Go out with a blaze of glory with Little Man’s Complex. Strengthen the son before he fully “takes over” (to the extent a 26 year old kid can take over a nuclear regime). Get some goodies out of Obama which will guarantee his regime at least another three to four years without collapsing—or at least have fun giving him the chocolate squirts. Work us vigorously to free up Iran and other trouble makers on the sidelines with their own programs and nefarious doings. Or maybe a combination of these.

I really pity Laura Ling and Euna Lee , the two American journalists that were kidnapped by NK border thugs back in March . Now stuck behind the lines in this whole situation .
Laura’s sister Lisa ling and the entire families of both on Larry King tonite . Just a really sad and frustrating situation . They got too close ! Hell , even SK soldiers have to be Tae Kwan Do experts and be at the ready every second when deployed close to the Panmunjong buildings , otherwise they try to grab them too .
I have to wonder ‘ what the Hell is wrong with those people?’
NK fruitcakes with nukes ....unbelievable

The Times likes the chances of a naval engagement. There seems to be some history there:

Fears mount that North Korea is preparing to attack the South

. . . No one will discuss numbers for security reasons but sailors and marines, as well as members of the Sea Special Attack Team, the coastguard’s commando force, have been arriving to join the several hundred troops already on Yeonpyeong.

These waters, around the Northern Limit Line, have become the most tense and dangerous patch of sea in Asia.

Precedent suggests that if there is still further mischief it may take place here in the Yellow Sea. Twice before, in the past decade, there have been naval battles between North and South off Yeonpyeong island — on both occasions in June during the peak fishing season for blue crab. . . .

Your points are made clearly and require little explanation.

I was not a witness to that incident up there. It could have been anything. I would be more comfortable having seen a video of what happened. If they got too close meaning they actually entered North Korean territory, that is the risk you take. They could have been nabbed in Chinese waters. Or they could have actually made a border incursion. I on the other hand fear a sellout by Al Gore flying up there to Pyongyang on behalf of Obambi [they have something we want now], and conceding something to get out two Gore staffers--and get a Bill Richardson foreign policy/humanitarian kudo in the process, in the process endanger South Korea and Japan and all its citizens.

People in the USA can relate to Lisa Ling a lot and tabloid-ish stuff a bit more than they can the far more important, larger issue of a Taepodong or Nodong which each could take out all of Honolulu or much of Tokyo. But thats just my take. Maybe I needed to see that show and judge for myself.

Didn't GW cut some kind of deal, so good that he took the Korean Commies off the Axis of Evil list? He took Syria off, too. Only left Iran.

Where are they getting these missiles from,China or Russia? I can't see them being clever enough to build their own missiles.
If theyre coming from china or Russia they need to be told to stop giving Kim jong any more, because if N.K use them on S Korea It will be China or Russia's fault.(Kim Jong is just a spoilt brat that never grew up and is still immature in his old age.)

I know Japan has been building up their military but not fast enough in my opinion. If this doesn’t scare Japan into building a strong military nothing will.

Unfortunately, Japan's Constitution would have to be Amended to allow Her to build certain aspects of Her military.

This was a good thing after WWII, but I believe not so much now. I believe she learned her lesson and has been a good citizen of the World for many many decades. So, I say let her build her military, which could be astounding, and show North Korea what she can do.

"What’s amazing is North Korea was able to develop their atomic weapons and delivery systems in the few months since Obama took office."

Just so you know, it didn't happen that quickly. Bill Clinton's Secretary of State, (Mad Albright) was over there in the '90's clicking Champagne classes with Kim Jong Ill (can't find the photo) for a stupid agreement that Ill would get a nuclear plant from the US if he stopped his enrichment efforts. He got his light-water nuclear reactor and then continued to build his NUKES!

Kim Jong played the Clintons, and then during the Bush Administration, declared he was going to start up his enrichment program. Ill did so and Bush did nothing, other than whine and take it to the UN. Ill has also made big noise with the Obami administration, who have done nothing.

NOW, we have a nuclear North Korea (thank you Bush and Obami).
I say KILL them ALL, before they have the capability to kill us and our children.

Good Afternoon/Evening AiT (your time), thanks for the ping.

While I can certainly appreciate your concern over the results of just bombing the Soongojim out of North Korea, we have to remember that Pyongyang is still in the early stages of obtaining and maintaining a nuclear arsenal.

The U.S. atomic bombs that took out Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not at all mass production devices, they were carefully and meticulously hand assembled, checked, double checked and probably triple and quadruple checked before being shipped off for use by the 509th on Tinian Island.

There was reportedly a third bomb for use in the event the Japanese refused to surrender after Nagasaki, and that bomb too was a hand-crafted special by our boys in Los Alamos.

Why do I bring this up? Because I doubt seriously that North Korea is at the stage where they could deliver a nuclear device to ANY target with reasonable assurance that it would go off as planned, and produce the damage intended. Big difference between a test detonation and actual application in the real world.

Another example of this is to look at North Korea’s missile technology. Their missiles are liquid fueled, not even as advanced as our now ancient Atlas and Titan ICBMs (the last liquid fueled missiles that were in the SAC inventory), the fueling process is delicate, troublesome, and one wrong move and it’s *BLAMMO*. We could chuck a brick at one of those NK missiles during the fueling process and screw them up big time.

Having said all that, IF we had a legal President with the stones of a Ronald Reagan, all they would need to do (IMHO) is to issue a public statement (along with strong private affirmations to Pyongyang) that “any North Korean attack against South Korea and/or Japan will be considered an attack upon the soil of the United States, and America will reserve the right to launch an unrestricted and unlimited retaliatory response upon North Korea, where there will be no targets considered ‘off limits’ (translation: ‘Comrade Chia Pet? We’ll nuke your damn olympic sized pool and water slide and every other little palace you’ve got over there’).

But, as the Iranians saw the obvious weakness in Jimmy STP Carter and seized our Embassy, and as the Soviets exploited that weakness themselves and invaded Afghanistan, the North Koreans (and probably the Iranians too) will make their next moves based on the fact that our pretender to the presidency is so breathtakingly naive and ignorant that any substantial U.S. response to their future aggressions is unlikely.

I imagine Larry King will re-broadcast that ,as the so-called trial date is coming up on 4 June ( your time) Please let us know what you hear . It was interesting to see the map that apparently shows the actual borderline well across the river and on the southern side of the river . One would think that the river is the demarcation ? If so , the women would have been across the river and on the NK side of that shore .
Perhaps the river ‘moves’ seasonally? It is reported that at first they ran for it , seeing the border guards coming . The producer - cameraman got away ,so perhaps there IS footage . But the girls froze up , as some ladies are want to do , especially non-soldier types and they got nabbed .
What sort of treatment can two asian American gals expect in an NK slam ? ugh...

Came across this at The Telegraph. No wonder he's breaking in a successor. Then, again, Castro looks about the same and he's still kicking around.

Fact of the matter is that any de-facto attack by DPRK upon South Korea and Japan will in fact be an attack on the United States, for two important, unavoidable reasons.

a) One is the mutual defense treaties already in place between the United States and those two countries. So if they are attacked, even in advance of attack, it is a fait d'accompli/there is no need to state the obvious--we obviously will be drug in to the hostilities on auto pilot with no debate; and b) even a bigger reason, an attack in this area in Asia will have already killed American soldiers, airman and perhaps sailors (if they Nodong or Scud Yokosuka or Atsugi for example, which they have targetted).

There will be no debate about going to war or not, we will already be at war.

That is what is frustrating about a lot of this. Some of the ho-hum attitude I see from Asia, back in the USA that one can sense and observe is, ignorantly enough, "well, if they cannot hit the continental US, no biggie." Fact is they forget tens of thousands of US troops who will be hit and perhaps a number killed, on any kind of attack out here in Northeast Asia...long before they can hit any West Coast city with a long range ICBM. Accordingly, war with North Korea is potentially just around the corner. What a rude awakening it will be to not a few Americans. Wonder if they will complain if Dancing with the Stars gets preempted, or US theatres go dark for several days and they are denied Star Wars and Terminator Salvation.

Right now it is a lot of dangerous brinksmanship and sabre rattling, but what happens when somebody really trips the wire and it starts to spiral out of control, either in the Yellow Sea, or along the DMZ, or a number of our aircraft are shot down or ships at sea are seized by DPRK Navy?

BTW, good to hear from you; in agreement with just about all you said.
