These days, I would not be surprised.
Sorry....I quickly skimmed through this. I missed this part.
“a disgruntled Iraq war veteran”
I do not like this at all either.
Maybe it's time to GPS the coordinates of their front doors. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Not exactly sure how I feel about this. I see pros and cons. I see kids that might overstep their authority as citizens and not law officers. And get into a whole host of legal troubles for getting involved in situations they have little or no information about.
Generally speaking law abiding armed citizens should not be encouraged to act like law enforcement folks as we do not have any protections law enforcement have as officers of the law. We have no obligation to shoot criminals that are threatening anyone but ourselves or our families or animals. If those people chose to not be armed, that was their choice. People do not understand the legal ramifications and average citizens should not be encouraged to act like police swat folks. Although I personally do not think there is anything wrong with adults learning tactical shooting and practical shooting techniques, that is critical to your personal survival with your own weapons.
Hell yeah
Makes me wish I was a Boy Scout.
I’d trade every single “a good parent takes you on vacation” vacation for 10 years in the Scouts. That’s about 30,000 miles. This is how bad I wish I could turn the clock back.
If I have kids, they’re being raised right.
I don’t really have a problem with this...as other posters noted (and as I also observed when I saw it, the trigger discipline. A small point but significant) the kids paid attention, so I think they had pretty serious teachers.
I didn’t realize the Explorers was co-ed. Interesting.
Index fingers indicate they’ve been trained by a serious fellow.
That’s new. They weren’t when I was in scouts. Personally don’t think it’s a change for the good.
Well. I guess to a 17 year old guy or gal it might be. I used to be in the USN (did three cruises on a carrier) I admit that I might have liked having women around, but in reality, I think it would make it more difficult, even though as a young guy, you might not see it as being more difficult.
I used to be a Scout, and we were more interested in building huge fires to try to jump over than we seemed to be about girls. But I suspect it is just my memory.
I agree with your entire post. That is the sum of my feelings on this. By itself, it doesn’t seem bad, but when you read how they describe the training and what it is for, there is the element of a nationalized youth group run by the government, and I don’t like that at all.
“Teaching marksmanship is fine, But I do not like this at all.”
The Explorers program had an LEO component to it 30 years ago. This is just bringing into the 21st century.
The scouts were started by Lord Baden-Powell as a military organization.
The Explorer program is beyond the Boy Scout phase and is dedicated toward career advancement. As stated in the article, law enforcement and fire fighting are primary occupations they focus on.
The fact that this post is based in Calif one would naturally assume that their focus would be on the Border Patrol aspect of law enforcement.
This is certainly a different world than the one you and I grew up in and I'm glad to see that some people are willing to teach our kids the realities of life. However I have a feeling that due to this article being published, some leftist organizations are going to put the pressure on to have this Explorer post cease and desist.........
