I had never been a fan of plastic guns (Glocks are great guns, but I hate the way they feel), but I shot a friend’s XD one day and was very impressed. I found a good deal and bought one. It is totally dependable and cleaning it is so easy that it’s a joke.

My Seecamp doesn’t have sights at all, but it’s designed for being up close.

I like the Kimbers, but if I ever get another 1911 it will either be something like an Ed Brown or a customized Colt.

I haven’t shot the new XD-M, but from what I can see it’s just got a modified grip. I’ve shot over 1000 rounds through my XD without cleaning it and NEVER had a FTF, FTE, jam, etc.

I know the Glocks are just as good, but they feel like a brick in my hand and the S&W M&P didn’t impress me at all.

I know that Wilson Combat is coming out with a polymer 9mm sometime this year and I might take a look at it, but I have a feeling the price point will be ridiculous.

The nice thing about the 1911s is that you can swap out all of the guts inexpensively and have a very dependable gun. The high-end ones are mainly about the fit and finish, they aren’t any more reliable.

Look into the new S&W MP15R chanbered in 5.45x39. Excellent caliber, still plenty of supplies and and relatively cheap.

Its a tad anemic velocity wise compared to .223 but the projectile is longer and buddy it tumbles and breaks when it hits.

Its a very nasty cartridge.

If I ever wanted to play around with gunsmithing I would probably by an RIA and go from there.

thanks for the info. why do you recommend a bolt action over semiauto? im not advocating ‘spray and pray’ but it seems that semiauto would have the advantage over bolt action
