(What would Reagan do?)

State his focus on the mortgage industry and stifle any attempt at discussion of this international situation?

Reagan would have already been on the tele from the Oval Office explaining to us his support for the Captain and what will be experienced by those pirates if he his not released post haste.

I like the part in the article where the pirates talked to Reuters and sounded desperate. “We are surrounded by warships and don’t have time to talk,” one said. “Please pray for us.”

I like the part where the pirates correctly assume that Reuters would pray for them.

Then again, Reagan would have told the nation that the PI RATS were taken out after the fact, and is just informing the nation of it.

I heard they gave them food and radio batteries. Why not send over spare ribs and pork chops?

Yep, it’s deja vu all over again. When Carter was discussing the plan to send in the Delta Team to rescue the hostages in Iran he was told by Beckwith that his soldiers would kill any armed guards they confronted. Carter was aghast and asked him if there was any way to use non lethal force so we didn’t have to kill anyone. And, while they were talking, Mondale was off in a corner playing with the handcuffs Beckwith brought as part of the briefing.

Yeah....so if we had some good ol’ boys that like to go for boat rides fer a little cash - I’m thinking them there pirates would become an endangered species pretty quick...if not, all the better = (job security) I would do it for a mill - lots cheaper than payin’ a ransom.... Yeah, two-three boat rides a year....sweet. could pay for my Barrett 82A1.... and some back up pieces. ;-P

They wouldn’t dare take an American with Bush in office.

Yeah! Bush was never nice to them, so Obama now has to suffer their ire. Another crises inherited from Bush. So unfair!

Negotiations don't seem to be working.

Abject pleading under discussion.

I hope that if a ransom is paid, I hope they follow the Julius Caesar strategy of returning to crucify them.

When Sulla died in 78 BC, Julius Caesar returned to Rome as a lawyer, prosecuted Sulla's supporters, and headed to the Greek town of Rhodes to study oratory. Pirates seized control of the vessel in 75 BC, kidnapped Caesar, and held him for ransom. Caesar was insulted at the ransom demand, which was insultingly low, and promised to crucify the pirates after he was free. At his insistence, the pirates raised the ransom demand to a level in accordance with his station: his friends quickly raised the sum. After his freedom was purchased, he assembled a small army, which captured the pirates and crucified them.

Has Obama made any statement at all on this yet? Something tells me Bush wouldn’t have dithered.

This was a chance for Obama to at least put on a strong face for the US. It seems he isn’t even pretending to care.

For all we know, the pirates may be Obama’s distant cousins...

I think you are on to something with separating the hostage from the goons. I wonder if a small submarine that can carry some seals could come up under the lifeboat and capsize it and quickly gain control of the situation.

Theoretically. Trouble is that the SEALs and their underwater SEAL delivery vehicles are probably nowhere near Somalia, and while they can be airlifted it would take some time to get them into position & onto a platform that could deliver them to the target. This could be why the Navy destroyer is playing for time. Or it could be that Obama fundamentally agrees with the pirates view on this. Take your pick.

I have never understood Conservatives idea of what Reagan would do. Reagan was a fiscal and social conservative, and that is great, but....

1. He deployed Marines to Beiruit ona mission with no clear objective, with rules of engagement that had US Marine sentries at the gate with no clip in their gun. Islamic Jihad (Hezbolla) sucker punched us and we packed up and left town. Later we lobbed 16 inch shells from offshore.

2. Iran Contra was all about appeasing Radical Islam. Undeer oath he didn’t remember anything. Not a shining moment.

3. Lbya? When Reagan left office Quaddafi was still in charge and a terrorist player.

He did win the cold war, but I’m not impressed with his record with third world satraps.

These Obama buffoons are so in over their heads that I don’t think we can last four years.

You can say that again. America will have suffered so severely for the next four year, and if King Obama loses next election, that we may never fully recover. We are so vulnerable now that I fear for us.

I think diverting 3 carrier task forces would really impress both the pirates.

Against 4 pirates in a lifeboat? A bit of an overkill wouldn't you say?
