Hmmm, I am getting an unclear image of a US aid ship full of food, medicine and trinkets arriving in the near future at a Somali port, (guess all you may) as an incentive to leave future US ships alone.

These are Americans in an essentially Al Queada controlled country. This isn’t going to end well with or without a ransom.
I am guessing that if they knew he were going to act upon it they would not have done this.
All the pirates need is a bail out. Once they get that I’m sure they will not seek out American ships any more

My internal profile of Obama is that he is a squish, who avoids confrontation by always giving away the US interest. Given the option, I think Obama would wheedle and whine, kowtow to the pirates and eventually pay them a handsome ransom out of the US Treasury.
But I don't think he will have that option.
These pirates are holding US citizens on foreign soil. The World is watching. There can be only one response.
I agree, its a no win scenario, the only way to get anywhere with this mindset is absolute overwhelming force that will decimate and destroy morale or any will to fight or further an aggression.

Maersk Line’s primary customer is the Department of Defense. The ship is probably loaded with stuff for the US bases in the gulf and Iraq. Hence the US crew.
