We need to stop the flow of guns and weapons towards Mexico. Let me express to you that we've seized in this two years more than 25,000 weapons and guns, and more than 90 percent of them came from United States, and I'm talking from missiles launchers to machine guns and grenades.

I call BS.

Good call. I read either here on FR or over on http://www.hotair.com that the figure is totally bogus. Of the tens of thousands of weapons confiscated by the Mexican government over the past decade, they sent a few hundred to the US for tracing because the weapons looked like they may have originated in the US. Of those that could be traced (and not all could be), 90% were traceable to the US.

So to sum up: the Mexican government only sent weapons to the US they they already thought originated in the US. It makes sense that a gun that has a marking on it indicating it might have been destined for the US market (such as “US” in a serial number on a Glock destined for sale in the US) will probably be traceable to the US.

The Myth of 90 Percent: Only a Small Fraction of Guns in Mexico Come From U.S.

In 2007-2008, the Mexican government confiscated over 29,000 guns from crime scenes. They sent 11,000 to the US for tracing, and only 6,000 were successfully traced. Of that six thousand, 5,114 were traced to US sources.

So, the real number is 5,114 / 29,000 = 17.6%.
