I was being serious, these people are sicko control freaks. I know people in Calif. who said they attempted to control the thermostats inside their homes. That even pissed off the liberals.

This bill will mean we pay more for products that are inferior. I’ll have to remember to thank my politician for screwing me over for my own good. What would us peons do without the superior thinkers in Washington DC?

Yep, definitely a good idea and the same I’ve been thinking. Especially for resale. I wonder how many years one would get for blackmarket bulbs? Are we going to change the BATF to the BATFB?

This report says that President Bush signed the bill... is this from before Jan 20?

I’m a big fan of incandescents. A BIG fan.

Diesel should last longer, but needs to be treated with biocide along with being kept relatively cool. I don’t have any direct experience, but it would seem possible.

“It’s difficult to imagine what one should hoard first; seeds, bullets or lightbulbs?”

In the past I’ve stocked up on freon and pesticide (both of which I still have and still use). Light bulbs were pretty far down my list, but since they’re going away, I figured that I better get them too. Like others have said, if you have the room, you might make a killing on E-Bay 5 years from now selling bulbs (R-12 went for $0.99 per can to $50 per can at its peak, maybe 10 years ago...now down a bit as the cars disappear. One semi-trailer would have nabbed $1M in profit.). Of course, the light bulb ban could get reversed, so there is some risk in speculating.

Other things to consider: Gold - which is good in a post-meltdown economy (i.e., after things stabilize and all money saved in dollars is worthless) - or to get our of a really tight spot (like Vietnam, after it was ‘liberated’ by Obama’s friends). But my next set of purchases will be non-perishables - everything from toothpaste to toilet paper - about 3 years worth (I have a list of about 100 items, cost will be $5K to $10K). I expect hyper-inflation followed by price controls...which assures shortages. Having the goods on hand simply means having what you want, paying a fair price, and not having to wait on line when you need more. Life will suck for all, but my family’s life might just be a bit better. It’s simply level of comfort that I’m shooting for.

Especially good to stock up if like me the majority of your light bulbs are the flush-mounted floodlights set in the ceiling.

I’m in the process of filling a cabinet with them: Lowe’s sells them in bulk in “contractor packs.”

“I’ve had mixed results with the CFLs. I put them places where it is a real pain in the can to change a bulb.”

One other option is to buy the super-long life incandescent bulbs that LBE sells (use my link). They are rated at 20,000 hours. The tradeoff is that you don’t get much light for the wattage, as I guess their filaments are super-thick, and they glow kind of yellow. I wasn’t too impressed, but I could definitely see their value in critical areas (like very hard to reach areas, or nuke plants, etc.).

And yet, And yet... you can no longer buy toilets that actually flush...

The article is from late 2007 - but it should be reposed just about every 3 months, so us FReepers don’t get caught short.

I started my bulk light bulb purchases the following month (Jan, 2008).

“Are they going to tell us what toilet paper we have to use next?”

Probably recycled newspapers....oh no, wait, they are all going out of business....they’ll probably just tell us we can only use one “square” at a time.
