Ironic. McCain has always hated the Guard and frequently cut their necessary appropriations.
McCain also doesn’t understand the organization and purpose of the Guard. It can only do police work as a state force, under the command of the governor. Thus each of the four border states must have their governor in charge. They may set up interstate compacts, but the control would still belong to some governor. It’s the Democrats who are always saying that only the federal government, not the states, can do immigration and border dutie, so the state controlled Guard shoud butt out.
If they get federalized, then they fall under the provisions of Posse Comitatus and can’t do law enforcement.
In reality, it’s all a show to make it look like Obama and Napolitano are doing something. If used the Guard will grade roads and fix trucks and man watch towers with a radio, nothing more.
And it will take Guardsmen, who are not full-time soldiers and who have already been called from their jobs and families for two or more Iraq deployments, another deployment away from home. They’ll just quit. But McCain won’t care.
I guess McCain has been watching too much O’reilly. Everytime he turns around he wants to use some Governor’s troops for a Federal mission. I don’t think O’reilly actually knows how the National Guard is organized or what kind of units comprise it. McCain appears to be no better.
Maybe Juan should call up the militia(s).
