Technically all businesses in the U.S. should operate tax free... BUT - this act is really nothing more than subsidizing a failed business model and a likely prelude for Gov't control over content. Next, they'll be bailing out the the RIAA.

I thought it was patriotic to pay your taxes, according to Uncle Joe Biden.
Then again, when have American newspapers been patriotic since FDR died?

maybe we should also give tax exempt status to horse and buggies or companies that make rotary phones.

As many Freepers pointed out, since newspapers are losing money, they are not paying corporate income taxes anyway. I guess the benefit to them of being “nonprofit” would be that “philanthropists” would get tax deductions for “donations” to the newspapers. I use quotes because buying a newspaper would be an inexpensive way to gain influence over politicians. I bet this explains why Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has invested in the New York Times.

Talk Radio too. Let Rush make money tax free! Exempt his Fla compound from real estate taxes. LOL

CHICAGO Newspapers perform a public service for democracyNews papers these days serve as propaganda arms for the socialist/communist. They ought to be illegal rather than rewarded. But, being they're not, we should just let them die off by themselves for the sake of our Republic.
To: Red Steel
Newspapers should be taxed at 90 percent.

Newspapers that accept non-profit status would not be allowed to endorse candidates, but they could cover political news just as they do now, . . Yeah, I can see the Austin - Un American Ultra - Liberal Longhorn, Non - Statesman doing that. When hell freezes over.

If nonprofits are supposed to be politically neutral and not lobby does this mean the NYT would change there reporting?

I am not opposed to this but I find it funny that suddenly it is a good idea to cut taxes...I wonder why this does not seem to be a good idea with everything...If Newspapers can recover due to a tax savings...wouldn’t everything???? I don’t get it.
