-- The whole point of a garden is to do the work yourself, right? --

Well, not the whole point, but an indispensable one. Hard to save money if you are paying somebody else to do the work. One also doesn't get the sense of satisfaction, or the calming effect of spending time with the process, when the chores are all hired out.

Obama's a cheap and dangerous phony. I feel sorry for his kids.

Herb garden used by the chefs is already been used since 2008.
President John Adams in 1800 had a garden on the lawn.
Woodrow Wilson raised sheep on the lawn.
Roosevelt raised carrots and beans on the lawn.

Surprising the reporters of the article gave no history, this President has no new ideas.

“Hard to save money if you are paying somebody else to do the work.”

Ah, but easy to do when the somebody is being paid by the American taxpayer.

“those disgusting slimy little green pickle like things from the South
That would be OKRA!”

Is she finally moving to DC?

Will the progam be taped in the White House?

Will she have a live audience?

Mama Winfrey must be thrilled.

Heh. I have three, all at "that formative age" between 12 and 18. I don't feel sorry or bad for them. I wish the world was a different/better place, but many things are beyond personal control. At the same time, many things are within personal control, and that's where our attitudes and action make a difference.

National politics is not a smart place to get emotionally invested. It's smart to learn the system the founders erected, and to probe how it's been squandered and lost, but no sense in crying over it.

It’s an environmental movement thing to have local foods.

The White House has lots of functions, so I think it would be okay to have food grown locally right there for the White House chefs. Lots of restaurants these days have gardens to get local food.

Cunning stunt ... who gets to guard the produce against bio attack? When you wrap in the cost of protecting the garden, those carrots and cucumbers will cost more than a pentagon hammer or toilet seat! My bet is that the food will never pass the lips of the first family.

You’re welcome! ...and the surprise, for some.

A few of us conservatives are developing some common ground with quite a few greenies who are starting to see some fiscal and social matters in a new old fashioned light. Many of them are urging each other to write in against the big agriculture bills.

In the exchange, we are discussing some “green” products, building (residential only) and a few other matters of no loss to us (except for increases in certain agreed-upon industries and technologies, which are happening anyway). Some younger neighbors discussed such things with me last year and helped get it going. Quite a few of the not-so-elite greenies are more traditional in most ways than I would have expected before (re. family structure, firewood, fiscal, other matters). There are also some matters of fair trade, but there’s also some agreement that it can be consumer-driven without the help of government.
