Rep. Connie Mack, voted against the $819-billion stimulus package

"History has shown us that no nation has ever spent its way to prosperity," Mack said in a statement the day of the vote. "Instead of throwing money at government programs that will do little to spur job creation, we should enact pro-growth solutions that allow private businesses -- and not the government -- to become the catalysts for job creation and economic growth."

Good. I’m glad it’s more than rhetoric. I don’t want to hear it from the ones who voted for bailouts and stimulus.

I have heard the term “retention bonus money” tossed around to describe this money given to these AIG execs. Being unfamiliar with the use of bonus money in the corporate setting I can only speculate why this money is given when a corporation is doing poorly. My guess is if a car gets stuck in the mud, all get out and help push it out. If you want the help to stick around to push AIG out of the mud, you offer them an incentive.

However, the plot thickens. U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd has now changed his story about what really happened. Perhaps he can no longer hide the truth. He said Wednesday that he was aware of changes in legislation for a loophole that allowed highly controversial bonuses for AIG, the embattled insurance company that has received federal bailout money. Why did they provide that loophole? And why are they acting so surprised that the money was sent out?

In a live interview on CNN, Dodd said, “I agreed reluctantly. I was changing the amendment because others were insistent.” Who were these “others?” Who were the Treasury officials who had asked him to add the language that paved the way for the bonuses? I can speculate that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is responsible and that Zer0 has had him behind closed doors giving him some teleprompter training. He will need one when he comes out to spin his story.
